The carriage of dangerous goods: obligations and liabilities under the Hague/Hague-Visby Rules

By Zeynep Damla Işık

“History has witnessed very serious and dangerous maritime accidents during the carriage of dangerous goods by sea. Many legal, logistical, and regulatory issues have arisen since there is a strong link between accidents during the transportation of dangerous goods and the considerable harm to people, other cargoes, and the environment. This situation has led to the need for uniform regulations in the international arena. Especially with the efforts of the United Nations (UN) and International Maritime Organization (IMO), many rules, regulations and recommendations have been made regarding the carriage of dangerous goods, and international agreements signed afterwards have been prepared according to these UN works. As a result, a large degree of global uniformity has been achieved in this field. The article aims to determine the legal framework for rights, obligations and especially the liabilities of the parties under the contract of international carriage of dangerous goods by sea in the framework of international regulations by focusing on Hague/Hague-Visby Rules.”
